Much more than a trip: an adventure and a test of endurance for both the bike and its rider.<\/h2>\n

Covering 3,300 kilometers by e-bike is not just an adventure. It’s also a different way to cross Europe, discover places that would otherwise be off the beaten path, and share experiences with people you meet along the way.<\/p>\n

For 30 days, I traveled from Oslo, Norway, to Le\u00f3n, Spain. Seven countries and 3,300 kilometers on an UrbanBiker UB310B<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

I was already familiar with this bike, the UB310B<\/a>, from some of my visits to UrbanBiker when the idea of putting it to the test on a long-distance trip began to take hold. The route would subject it to very different geographies, climates, and surfaces. Therefore, I needed a versatile bike ready to perform for many consecutive days.<\/span><\/p>\n

The adventure begins in Oslo<\/h2>\n

The departure took place next to the Oslo lighthouse, with panniers full and my head even more packed with ideas. Thousands of kilometers lay ahead, a succession of bridges, roads, paths, and landscapes that would change as I headed south.<\/p>\n

“I had everything planned: in my head, on my phone, the kilometers, the routes, the stages\u2026 But even so, there was a feeling of uncertainty. A mix of excitement, eagerness, and also nerves, because in 30 days and 3,300 kilometers, many things can happen that are impossible to plan. So that first night, with the bike ready in Oslo to leave the next day, I slept very little. I guess it was the adrenaline.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Seven countries and a different Europe from the saddle of a bike<\/h2>\n

From personal experience, when one travels through Europe, it’s usually from airport to airport and from big city to big city: Oslo, Gothenburg, Brussels, Paris, Madrid\u2026 And, seen this way, it’s easy to get the feeling of a fairly uniform, even homogeneous, Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n

But from a bicycle, the perception changes completely. The routes and paths take you through avenues, boulevards, secondary roads, towns, and neighborhoods that would not normally be part of a tourist trip. And, above all, they force you to move at a different speed.<\/span><\/p>\n

That speed allows you to observe daily life. Depending on the time, you see children going to or leaving school, people on their way to work, people having coffee, small shops and local cafes away from tourist areas.<\/span><\/p>\n

And that’s where the peculiarities of each country begin to appear. Not so much in the grand monuments or the most obvious architecture, but in small gestures, customs, and ways of organizing daily life. Also in the structure of cities and towns, in how their streets, roads, public spaces are designed, and the way people use them.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the end, the bicycle allowed me to see a Europe much less uniform than it seems when we simply jump from one big city to another.<\/span><\/p>\n

How did the UB310B perform over 3,300 kilometers?<\/h2>\n

Regarding the bike, the UrbanBiker UB310B<\/a>, I finished the trip extremely satisfied. After 30 days and 3,300 kilometers, it performed practically the same as on the first day: no noises, no problems, and no mechanical incidents.<\/span><\/p>\n

My initial intention was to travel with about 20 kg in the panniers, but I ended up carrying 24 kg. Of that, about 5 kg was for sleeping gear \u2014 tent, sleeping bag, and inflatable mattress \u2014 another 5 kg for clothes and waterproof material, and around 14 kg for electronic equipment: laptop, three cameras, drone, power bank, chargers, and batteries.<\/span><\/p>\n

I knew I was quite loaded and close to the limit I had set for myself, but throughout the route, that extra weight didn’t pose any problem for me or the bike.<\/span><\/p>\n

Another of my big uncertainties before starting the trip was the battery. It was my first long e-bike trip, and I didn’t really know how long a charge could last when so many variables came into play: wind, rain, elevation changes, roads, bike paths, trails, or even the type of surface.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, one of the things that surprised me most was how natural it felt to get to know the bike. After 5 or 6 days of travel, I was already able to look at the route, see the kilometers, the hills, and the wind conditions, and almost automatically know how the battery would behave.<\/span><\/p>\n

I knew if I could do 100 kilometers without recharging, if I would need an hour of charging during the day, or if, due to the conditions of the stage, it would be better to take advantage of two stops to plug it in. Little by little, you start making these calculations almost without realizing it.<\/span><\/p>\n

For example, if the stage had significant elevation, I would already estimate approximately 10% more consumption than on a similar but flatter route. Wind, on the other hand, had a much greater impact. On some days, I had headwinds with gusts of 30 or 40 km\/h, and consumption could easily increase by 30% to 40%.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since my average speed was around 20 km\/h, I knew that to cover about 100 kilometers, I would be pedaling five or six hours. That gave me plenty of leeway to organize charging. If conditions were normal, I would simply make my stops for breakfast, lunch, or rest without worrying too much about finding an outlet. But if I knew I had headwinds, significant elevation, or a more demanding stage, I would use those same stops to charge the battery.<\/span><\/p>\n

My UrbanBiker’s battery recovered approximately 14% per hour connected. Throughout the entire trip, I never had to make a truly long stop exclusively for charging. At most, on two or three particularly demanding days, I needed to recover around 30% or 40% during the day.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the end, something that seemed like one of the big unknowns of the trip before I left became completely natural. You get to know the bike, its limits, and its performance almost as if you were learning to interpret a new language.<\/span><\/p>\n

A journey also followed from Le\u00f3n<\/h2>\n

The adventure began to attract interest in Le\u00f3n from its early stages. Both Onda Cero Le\u00f3n and Leonoticias reported on the journey while Ernesto was still making his way south through Europe.<\/p>\n

Onda Cero highlighted that it’s not about a competition or proving anything, but about enjoying a different way of traveling. With nearly 24 kg of luggage \u2014 including camping gear and recording equipment \u2014 Ernesto set out to complete an average of close to 100 kilometers daily without giving up on observing and experiencing each place along the route.<\/p>\n

Leonoticias focused on the protagonist’s personal story: a Mexican “with eight Leonese surnames” who chose the bicycle to cover the 3,300 kilometers separating Oslo from Le\u00f3n, the city with which he maintains a close personal and professional connection.<\/p>\n
